It is a well-known phenomenon that people don’t really get the interest in technology. One of the main reasons for this may be because we are constantly distracted by new inventions. One example of an invention that does not always get much attention but is still very interesting is the Chinese smart watch. As China has become one of the largest smartphones, computer, and tablet markets, it makes sense they would start to work on their own wearable devices.
In this article, I will discuss the significance of the Chinese smart watches and how they are used.
Many people may not know that China is one of the largest smartphone markets in the world. In February 2014, it was reported that China had become the biggest market for smartphones in terms of unit sales with over 90 million units sold (BBC News, 2014). This one statistic alone illustrates how technologically advanced China has become. Looking into this further, in November of 2013 IDC reported that China had become the leader in terms of smartphone shipments with over 100 million units shipped. It is safe to say that China is one of the leading markets for smartphones and most likely will continue this trend well into the future. The Chinese smart watch is just another product to come out from this emerging market.
Two years ago, a company called U8 released a smart watch which they named the uWatch. The watch was priced at about $150 and featured a 1.54-inch display. The screen could display pictures, texts, weather, and even play music. Although some people were not impressed with the uWatch, I think it is safe to say that this is only the beginning of Chinese smart watches.
The current state of Chinese smart watches can be viewed as early prototypes for what will eventually become a big market for wearable devices in China. The Chinese smart watch market has a lot of potential and much more people will be purchasing these devices in the future. More watches and applications will be released at a later date which I will discuss in more detail below.
The reason I think the Chinese smart watch market has such a large potential is because the people of China are eager to buy new technologies, especially those related to technology. Another good example of this is the Chinese smartphone market. As mentioned in the beginning of this article, it has become one of the largest markets for smartphones and its people are willing to spend money on these devices. The same thing can be said about Chinese smart watches.
Imagine a world where you don’t have to pull out your phone every time you want to check how much time is left on your parking meter or if you need to decide if you should go back home or not. This all may sound very futuristic, but a world like this may be just around the corner with even more advanced smart watches like Google Glass or maybe even eventually iGlasses (Google Glasses made by Apple).
A world like this would be convenient for everyone especially those who are always on the go. Currently, the uWatch is one of a kind but there are more coming out with better features and a lower price. Companies have been releasing new Chinese smart watches at a rapid pace and it is estimated that over 200 models will be released in 2014 (CNET Asia, 2013). I think this large number of smart watches will only help to grow the market. As more Chinese smart watches are released, more applications will be created. Applications will make these watches even more useful and will increase the number of Chinese smart watch users.
The uses of Chinese smart watches can be divided into three main categories: health, information, and entertainment. In this article, I will focus on the health and information categories.
One of the main uses of Chinese smart watches is for people who are interested in sports. Sports lovers will be able to track their training and exercises with a lot of information. For example, if you are a runner, you will be able to check your heart rate during runs, get the weather conditions (day or night), and even save your location. If you are a cyclist, you will be able to track your speed, distance, and even your position. There are very few sports that can’t be tracked by a Chinese smart watch.
To put the usefulness of these watches into perspective, take the example of a photographer and his camera. The photographer will have to be very familiar with his camera and know everything about it. If you are a photographer, your camera is one of the most valuable tools you have at your disposal. It should be treated with care and put away when not in use.
