Air freight vs sea freight from china to india

Air Freight vs Sea Freight from China to India: Cost, Time and Which to Choose

In the air freight vs sea freight from China to India decision, sea freight is almost always cheaper and air freight is almost always faster. As a rough guide, air cargo costs 5–8 times more than LCL sea for the same cartons, but arrives in 5–10 days instead of 3–6 weeks. Below about 30–45 kg, air or courier usually wins; above about 100 kg, sea usually wins.

This guide covers chargeable weight, indicative October 2026 rupee rates, transit times, a worked example with duty, which goods suit which mode, battery limits, and courier vs air cargo.

Key takeaways

  • Air is charged by chargeable weight: the higher of actual kg or L×W×H (cm) ÷ 6,000 for air cargo (÷ 5,000 for express courier).
  • Sea LCL is charged by CBM: usually per cubic metre with a 1 CBM minimum, or per 1,000 kg if the cargo is very heavy.
  • Indicative costs (October 2026): with IFC, air cargo is about ₹750 per kg door to door with duty paid (50+ kg general cargo; ₹1,350 per kg for battery, liquid, cosmetic or magnet goods), and sea costs roughly half the air rate per kg (₹50–150 per kg for shipments over 5,000 kg).
  • Transit: air 5–10 days door to door; sea 12–20 days port to port and roughly 3–6 weeks door to door for LCL.
  • Duty rises with air freight: customs duty is charged on CIF value, but Indian valuation rules cap air freight in the assessable value at 20% of FOB.
  • Batteries change everything: power banks and loose lithium batteries are cargo-aircraft-only and many air consolidators refuse them; plan these by sea with proper DG papers.

Air freight vs sea freight from China to India: how do costs compare?

Air bills per kg and sea per CBM, so convert both to the total door-to-door cost for your exact cartons. Indicative ranges for general cargo (no batteries or other dangerous goods) from South China or Yiwu to major Indian cities:

FCL sea (20ft or 40ft)Per containerQuoted per container; compare against LCL from roughly 12–15 CBMAbout 3–5 weeksLarge, heavy or bulky loads

These ranges are indicative, October 2026. Rates move with fuel, capacity and festive peaks (Diwali, Chinese New Year); they are not IFC prices. Compare written quotes with the same scope: pickup, China export clearance, freight, Indian clearance, CFS or airport charges and delivery. For past published air rate cards, see our note on air freight charges from China to India; for sea, read how LCL shipping from China to India is priced.

How is chargeable weight calculated for air and sea?

Most cost surprises come from chargeable weight, not the rate. Measure and weigh every carton before asking for quotes.

Air cargo: volumetric weight at 1:6,000

Volumetric kg per carton = length × width × height (cm) ÷ 6,000. You pay on whichever is higher: actual gross weight or volumetric weight. One CBM equals about 167 kg for air cargo. So if your goods weigh less than 167 kg per CBM (cushions, lampshades, plastic toys, shoes in boxes), you pay for space, not weight. Rates per kg fall at weight breaks such as 45, 100, 300 and 500 kg.

Express courier: volumetric weight at 1:5,000

Couriers divide by 5,000, so one CBM counts as 200 kg and bulky cartons cost more. Some door-to-door air services also use ÷ 5,000, so check the divisor on every quote.

Sea LCL: CBM or weight/measure

CBM = length × width × height (in metres) × number of cartons. A 50 × 40 × 40 cm carton is 0.08 CBM. LCL is billed per CBM, or per 1,000 kg where the cargo is heavier than 1 tonne per CBM (stone, metal parts). Most consolidators have a minimum of 1 CBM plus fixed per-shipment charges, which is why very small shipments do not save much by sea.

How long does air and sea shipping from China to India take?

StageAir cargoLCL sea

Delivery to your city1–3 days2–7 days; add about a week if cargo moves by rail to ICD Tughlakabad or Patparganj for Delhi NCR
Total door to door5–10 daysAbout 3–6 weeks

Transit times are indicative, October 2026. A customs examination, a wrong HS code, a missing BIS licence or a document mismatch can add days in either mode.

Worked example: the same shipment by air vs LCL sea in rupees

An Amazon seller in Delhi buys 2,000 plastic mobile phone cases from a Shenzhen supplier. FOB value is ₹1,60,000 (₹80 per piece). Packing: 20 cartons of 50 × 40 × 40 cm, 12 kg each.

  1. Actual weight: 20 × 12 kg = 240 kg.
  2. Volume: 0.5 × 0.4 × 0.4 = 0.08 CBM per carton, so 1.6 CBM in total.
  3. Air chargeable weight: 50 × 40 × 40 ÷ 6,000 = 13.33 kg per carton, so about 267 kg. This is higher than 240 kg actual, so air bills 267 kg.
  4. Sea chargeable volume: 1.6 CBM (above the 1 CBM minimum and well under 1,000 kg per CBM).

Step 1: customs duty for each mode

HS code 39269099 (other articles of plastics): BCD 15%, SWS 10% of BCD, no AIDC, IGST 18%, no anti-dumping duty. Rates as of October 2026; confirm for your exact HS code on the India import duty rates page. Assumptions: no separate insurance, so customs adds 1.125% of FOB; no landing charges (removed from the valuation rules in 2017). For air, valuation rules count air freight only up to 20% of FOB.

ItemAir cargoLCL sea
FOB value₹1,60,000₹1,60,000
International freight (actual)₹85,440 (267 kg × ₹320)₹5,600 (1.6 CBM × ₹3,500)
Freight counted for customs₹32,000 (capped at 20% of FOB)₹5,600
Insurance (1.125% of FOB)₹1,800₹1,800
Assessable value (CIF)₹1,93,800₹1,67,400
BCD 15%₹29,070₹25,110
SWS 10% of BCD₹2,907₹2,511
IGST 18% on (AV + BCD + SWS)₹40,640₹35,104
Total duty and IGST paid at customs₹72,617₹62,725

Step 2: landed cost per piece

Door-to-door freight and clearance (before duty), using mid-range indicative rates: air 267 kg × ₹450 = ₹1,20,150; LCL 1.6 CBM × ₹12,000 = ₹19,200. If you are GST-registered, the IGST comes back as input tax credit, so your real cost is FOB + freight + BCD + SWS:

  • By air: ₹1,60,000 + ₹1,20,150 + ₹31,977 = ₹3,12,127, about ₹156 per piece, in stock in roughly a week.
  • By LCL sea: ₹1,60,000 + ₹19,200 + ₹27,621 = ₹2,06,821, about ₹103 per piece, in stock in roughly 4–5 weeks.

Air costs about ₹1,05,000 more, or ₹53 per piece, to save around three to four weeks. On ₹80 phone cases that wipes out most of the margin, so sea is the clear choice. Air makes sense only if the profit you would lose by being out of stock for those weeks is bigger than ₹1.05 lakh.

Step 3: try a split shipment

Send a few cartons by air to go live and the rest by sea. Here, 3 cartons (300 pieces, 40 kg chargeable) by air cost about ₹18,000, and the other 17 cartons (1.36 CBM) by LCL about ₹16,320. Total freight of about ₹34,300 is only ₹15,000 more than all-sea, and your listing goes live in a week. Small air lots can hit minimum charges, so confirm the figure.

Where is the break-even?

Because LCL has a minimum of about 1 CBM plus fixed per-shipment costs (roughly ₹12,000–16,000 door to door), and air cargo costs about ₹350–450 per kg, the pure cost break-even sits at about 30–45 kg chargeable weight. Below that, air or courier is often the same price or cheaper and much faster. From about 100 kg up, sea is usually far cheaper. Run your own numbers in the IFC shipment calculator.

Which is better, air or sea freight, for my products?

Quick test: divide goods value by air chargeable weight. If your goods are worth ₹4,000 per chargeable kg, an air bill of ₹450 per kg is about 11% of value and often acceptable. If they are worth ₹300 per kg, air freight would cost more than the goods. In the example above, phone cases work out at about ₹600 per chargeable kg, so air freight came to 75% of the product value.

Usually suits airUsually suits sea
Samples and pre-production approvalsFurniture, sofas, chairs and beds
Urgent restocks for Amazon or Flipkart best-sellersLighting fixtures, chandeliers, sanitaryware, tiles
Small, high-value items: watch parts, jewellery findings, electronic componentsHotel furnishings, linen in bulk, kitchen equipment
Machine spare parts when a production line is stoppedMachinery, tools, hardware, metal parts
Trial orders under about 45 kgAny repeat order above about 100 kg or 1 CBM

Interior designers and architects usually do best by sea with a 5–6 week buffer, using air only for a missing fitting. For large volumes, compare LCL against a full container in our FCL vs LCL guide.

Can batteries and dangerous goods go by air from China to India?

Often not by normal air cargo, and this decides the mode before price does. Under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations:

  • Loose lithium-ion batteries and power banks (UN 3480): forbidden on passenger aircraft, allowed only on cargo aircraft at a state of charge of no more than 30%, with full dangerous-goods documentation. Many air consolidators and couriers refuse them.
  • Batteries packed with equipment (UN 3481): from 1 January 2026, lithium-ion cells or batteries above 2.7 Wh packed with equipment must also ship at no more than 30% state of charge.
  • Batteries inside devices (Bluetooth speakers, smartwatches): usually accepted with a UN 38.3 test summary and MSDS, subject to the carrier’s own rules.
  • Other restricted items: perfumes, aerosols, nail polish, paints, strong magnets and many liquids need DG handling or are refused on consolidated air.

By sea, lithium batteries are Class 9 dangerous goods under the IMDG Code. They can travel with a DG declaration and proper packing, but some LCL consolidators restrict them or charge a DG surcharge, so declare them at booking. Separately, Indian rules apply whatever the mode: lithium batteries, power banks and many electronics need BIS registration under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (check the BIS website), and wireless devices may need WPC approval.

Express courier vs air cargo: which should you use?

Both fly, but the services and paperwork differ.

For commercial stock you need an IEC and GSTIN in either case, so the courier route is not a way around import rules. Courier rules and limits are set by the CBIC; regular cargo Bills of Entry are filed on ICEGATE. Once you cross about 30–45 kg, consolidated air cargo is usually cheaper per kg than courier.

How do I choose between air and sea? A 6-step checklist

  1. Get the packing list: carton count, outer size in cm and gross weight per carton from your supplier.
  2. Work out both units: total CBM for sea and chargeable kg (÷ 6,000) for air.
  3. Check restrictions: batteries, liquids, magnets, and Indian licences such as BIS, WPC, FSSAI or CDSCO for your HS code.
  4. Get two door-to-door quotes with the same scope, and ask whether duty is included (DDP) or extra.
  5. Compare freight as a % of goods value and the cost of waiting 3–4 extra weeks.
  6. Consider a split: a few cartons by air for launch, the rest by sea. To understand the duty side, read our import duty from China to India guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, air or sea freight from China to India?

For most commercial orders above about 100 kg or 1 CBM, sea freight is better because it costs a fraction of air. Air is better for samples, urgent restocks, high-value goods and shipments under about 45 kg, where the time saved is worth more than the extra freight.

How much does air cargo from China to India cost per kg?

As an indicative October 2026 range, air cargo costs about Rs 280 to 450 per chargeable kg airport to airport and about Rs 350 to 600 per kg door to door for 100 kg and above, before duty and IGST. Express courier is higher, about Rs 450 to 900 per kg. Always get a written quote.

How long does sea shipping from China to India take?

Port-to-port transit from Chinese ports such as Shenzhen, Nansha, Ningbo or Shanghai to Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Kolkata is about 12 to 20 days. Door to door, LCL usually takes about 3 to 6 weeks once you add consolidation, customs clearance at the CFS and delivery.

Is air freight cheaper than sea freight for small shipments?

It can be. LCL sea usually has a minimum of 1 CBM plus fixed clearance and handling charges, so for shipments under about 30 to 45 kg chargeable weight, air cargo or courier often costs the same or less and arrives weeks earlier.

Can I ship power banks or lithium batteries from China to India by air?

Loose lithium-ion batteries and power banks are forbidden on passenger aircraft and can only fly on cargo aircraft at no more than 30% charge with full dangerous-goods papers. Sea freight as Class 9 dangerous goods is usually more practical. In India, lithium batteries and power banks also need BIS registration whatever the mode.

Is customs duty different for air and sea shipments?

The duty rates are the same, but duty is charged on CIF value, so the freight you pay is part of the assessable value. Higher air freight raises the duty, although Indian valuation rules cap air freight in the assessable value at 20% of FOB.

Should I use a courier like DHL or FedEx or air cargo for my China order?

Use courier for samples and parcels under about 20 to 30 kg, since it is door to door and simple. For larger commercial shipments, consolidated air cargo is cheaper per kg and uses a 6,000 volumetric divisor instead of 5,000. Courier imports also have value limits and excluded goods under CBIC rules.

How does customs clearance work for imports in india

How Does Customs Clearance Work for Imports in India? Step-by-Step Guide for China Shipments (2026)

How does customs clearance work for imports in India? Your customs broker (CHA) files a Bill of Entry on ICEGATE before the ship arrives. Customs checks it through its risk system and faceless assessment. You pay duty online, the goods are examined if selected, and the officer gives Out of Charge. After that, the CFS or ICD releases your cargo against the delivery order.

This guide follows a China shipment through each stage. It covers Bill of Entry types and deadlines, a duty calculation in rupees, realistic timelines, indicative CHA, CFS and DO charges, and the mistakes that most often hold up Chinese cargo at Indian ports and ICDs.

Key takeaways

  • File early: for sea cargo from China, the Bill of Entry is due by the end of the day before the vessel arrives. Late filing attracts charges.
  • Have three things ready: IEC, GSTIN and the correct 8-digit HS code.
  • Assessment is faceless: an officer anywhere in India may assess your Bill of Entry. The port handles examination.
  • Duty is stacked: BCD and any cess are charged on the CIF value, then IGST on the total. GST-registered importers can usually claim the IGST back as input credit.
  • Typical timeline: about 2–5 working days from arrival to Out of Charge with clean documents. LCL needs extra days for de-stuffing at the CFS.
  • Biggest delays: document mismatches, wrong HS codes, missing BIS or WPC approval and undervalued invoices.

How does customs clearance work for imports in India, step by step?

Commercial imports are cleared under the Customs Act, 1962, and almost all paperwork goes through ICEGATE, the customs e-filing portal. For a sea shipment from Shenzhen, Ningbo or Shanghai to Nhava Sheva, the steps run in this order:

  1. Documents from the supplier: the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading reach you and your CHA before the vessel arrives.
  2. IGM filed: the shipping line (and the consolidator for LCL) files the Import General Manifest, the list of all cargo on board. Your Bill of Entry is linked to your cargo’s line on it.
  3. Bill of Entry filed: your CHA declares the HS code, value, quantity, IEC, GSTIN and any licence or BIS details. Supporting documents are uploaded on e-Sanchit.
  4. Risk check and assessment: the Risk Management System (RMS) decides whether the Bill of Entry is accepted as filed, sent for assessment, marked for examination, or both.
  5. Duty payment: you pay BCD, cess and IGST online on ICEGATE.
  6. Examination (if selected): officers at the CFS or ICD open and check the cargo against the declaration.
  7. Out of Charge (OOC): the officer releases the goods from customs control. Legally, customs clearance is now complete.
  8. Delivery order and CFS release: you collect the delivery order (DO) from the shipping line or forwarder and pay CFS charges. The CFS issues a gate pass and the truck leaves.

What documents and registrations do you need before the ship arrives?

Registrations on your side

  • IEC: the Importer Exporter Code from DGFT, linked to your PAN. It is needed for any commercial import.
  • GSTIN: it must be declared on the Bill of Entry so the IGST you pay is available as input tax credit.
  • Product approvals: BIS registration or an ISI licence for goods under a Quality Control Order (many electronics, toys, furniture and steel items), WPC approval for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices, FSSAI for food and CDSCO for medical devices and cosmetics.
  • A licensed customs broker: you may legally file your own Bill of Entry, but most small and mid-size importers use a CHA. The work needs ICEGATE access and staff at the port.

Documents for each shipment

  • Commercial invoice: your name, address and GSTIN as consignee, the real price paid, the Incoterm and a clear description of each item. Vague words like “parts” or “accessories” invite queries.
  • Packing list: carton count, net and gross weight and marks. These must match the invoice and bill of lading exactly.
  • Bill of lading or air waybill: for LCL this is usually a house bill of lading. The original must be surrendered, or a telex release issued, before you get a delivery order in India.
  • Freight and insurance details, plus a catalogue or technical sheet: these support the CIF value and the HS code.
  • Certificate of origin: India has no free trade agreement with China. You need one only to claim an Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA) concession on an eligible item, following the CAROTAR origin rules.

Fix the HS code before you place the order, not when the cargo is at the port. You can check duty and compliance notes for any 8-digit code on IFC’s India import duty rates by HS code page.

Which Bill of Entry should you file, and by when?

The Bill of Entry is your formal declaration to customs. Its type depends on what you will do with the goods and when you file it.

Bill of Entry typeWhen it is usedWhat it means for you
Home consumptionGoods will be sold or used in India nowThe normal choice for traders, online sellers and project buyers. All duty is paid now.
Into-bond and ex-bondGoods enter, then leave, a bonded warehouseDuty is paid later, on each quantity taken out.
Advance filingUp to 30 days before arrivalRecommended. Assessment can start before the vessel berths.
Filed after arrivalOnce the cargo has landedFor sea cargo from China, this is late and attracts late presentation charges.

The filing deadline most importers miss

Since the Finance Act 2021 change to section 46, the Bill of Entry for sea cargo from China must be filed before the end of the day before the vessel arrives, whether the cargo clears at the port or at an ICD. Air cargo can be filed until the end of the arrival day. So your CHA needs final documents 3–4 days before the ETA. Late filing attracts charges: currently ₹5,000 a day for the first three days and ₹10,000 a day after that, unless the officer accepts your reason. Check the current CBIC notification, because these amounts can change.

How does customs assess and examine your goods?

Self-assessment and the Risk Management System

Indian customs works on self-assessment: you declare the HS code, value and duty yourself through your CHA. The RMS then scores each Bill of Entry on importer history, product, origin and value. A facilitated Bill of Entry needs no assessment or examination. You pay duty and get Out of Charge. Others go for assessment, examination, or both.

Faceless assessment

Since October 2020, assessment has been faceless across India. A Bill of Entry for Nhava Sheva may be assessed by officers in another city. If they have doubts, a query is raised on ICEGATE asking for a catalogue, proof of payment, freight details or a BIS licence. Each query adds a day or two, so a clean first filing saves time.

If the officer disagrees with your value or HS code, the Bill of Entry is reassessed and you pay the difference. An invoice far below the price of similar recent imports is likely to be rejected.

Examination and Out of Charge

When examination is ordered, officers at the CFS, ICD or air cargo terminal open the cargo. They check quantity, description, markings, origin and BIS/ISI marks. For retail packs, they also check the Legal Metrology declaration: importer name and address, MRP and month of import. Your CHA arranges labour and pays the examination charges. When everything matches and duty is paid, the officer gives Out of Charge.

The cargo stays at the CFS until you collect the delivery order and pay the CFS charges. Under section 48, goods not cleared within 30 days of unloading can be auctioned by the custodian after notice. Do not leave cargo at the port while payments are sorted out.

How is import duty calculated and paid at customs?

Duty is charged on the assessable value. This is the CIF value (cost + insurance + freight to the Indian port), converted to rupees at the CBIC customs exchange rate. The old 1% landing charge was removed from the valuation rules in 2017. Customs adds Basic Customs Duty (BCD), the Social Welfare Surcharge (10% of BCD unless exempt), AIDC where applicable and any anti-dumping duty, then IGST on the total. Our guide to import duty from China to India explains each part.

Worked example: 200 office chairs from Foshan to Nhava Sheva

Assumptions: 200 swivel office chairs (HS 94013900) at FOB USD 25 each, or USD 5,000. Sea freight is USD 400 and insurance USD 50, so CIF is USD 5,450. The exchange rate is ₹96.95 per USD, the CBIC import rate notified on 2 October 2026. The IFC duty database shows BCD 20%, AIDC 5%, no SWS on this line, IGST 18% and no anti-dumping duty. Rates as of October 2026; confirm for your exact HS code.

ItemHow it is calculatedAmount (₹)

Basic Customs Duty20% of AV1,05,676
AIDC5% of AV26,419

IGST18% of 6,60,4731,18,885
Total paid at customsBCD + AIDC + IGST2,50,980

The IGST of ₹1,18,885 is usually claimable as input tax credit when your GSTIN is on the Bill of Entry. Your real duty cost is the ₹1,32,095 of BCD and AIDC, about 25% of the assessable value. Office chairs also fall under a BIS furniture Quality Control Order, so check the current ISI requirement before shipping.

Duty is paid online on ICEGATE. For a self-assessed Bill of Entry it is due on the day of filing. After reassessment, it is due within one working day, and interest applies after that. Try your own product in the IFC shipment calculator.

Why do China shipments get stuck in Indian customs?

  • Undervalued invoice: a low invoice meant to save duty is compared with similar imports, rejected and raised, and penalties are possible. Declare the real price.
  • Wrong or vague HS code: a code chosen for a lower rate, or a description like “household items”, leads to reassessment. Classify each product separately.
  • Missing BIS, WPC or other approvals: goods under a Quality Control Order cannot be cleared without the licence, and some must be re-exported.
  • Documents that do not match the cargo: a different carton count, weight or marks triggers examination. Mixed-supplier LCL lots are prone to this.
  • Anti-dumping duty not budgeted: many Chinese products carry it. Check the current notification for your HS code on the CBIC website.
  • No telex release or unpaid freight: no delivery order is issued, even after Out of Charge.

Pre-shipment checklist

  1. IEC active, and your GSTIN correct on the invoice.
  2. 8-digit HS code agreed with your CHA, with anti-dumping duty checked.
  3. BIS, WPC, FSSAI or CDSCO approval in hand if needed.
  4. Invoice, packing list and bill of lading checked against each other before loading.
  5. Documents with your CHA 3–4 days before ETA.
  6. Funds ready for duty, DO and CFS charges on arrival.

How IFC helps with customs clearance in India

IFC – Imports From China has more than 15 years in China–India import and export. Our own offices in Guangzhou and Yiwu have translators and English-speaking staff who can check supplier invoices, packing lists and markings before goods leave China, which is where most clearance problems can be stopped. We load mixed containers and air cargo daily and have a warehouse at our headquarters.

We handle sourcing, supplier verification, quality inspection, LCL and FCL sea freight, air cargo and customs clearance in India. If you prefer not to handle Bills of Entry, CFS charges and duty payments yourself, our DDP shipments from China to India deliver door to door to major cities, including Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad.

Bottom line

Customs clearance in India is predictable when the work is done before the cargo lands: a correct HS code, the real value, matching documents, the right approvals and an early Bill of Entry. Get those right and most China shipments reach Out of Charge within a few working days.

Frequently asked questions

How many days does customs clearance take in India for goods from China?

With clean documents and an early Bill of Entry, FCL sea cargo usually gets Out of Charge in 1 to 3 working days after arrival and LCL in 3 to 5, because LCL is de-stuffed at the CFS first. Examination adds 2 to 4 days. Indicative, October 2026.

Can I do customs clearance myself without a CHA?

Yes. An importer can register on ICEGATE and file the Bill of Entry in their own name. Most small and mid-size importers still use a licensed customs broker, because the work needs daily ICEGATE handling, query replies and someone at the CFS or ICD for examination and release.

What is the difference between an advance and a regular Bill of Entry?

An advance Bill of Entry is filed up to 30 days before the vessel or flight arrives, so assessment can start early. For sea cargo from China, the law requires filing by the end of the day before arrival, so early filing is effectively the norm. Filing later attracts late presentation charges.

What happens if customs selects my shipment for examination?

Officers at the CFS, ICD or air cargo terminal open the packages and check quantity, description, markings, origin and BIS or Legal Metrology labelling against your Bill of Entry. Your CHA arranges labour and pays examination charges. If everything matches, Out of Charge is given; if not, the goods may be reassessed or held.

Is the IGST paid at customs refundable?

It is not refunded in cash, but a GST-registered importer can usually claim the IGST paid at customs as input tax credit, provided the correct GSTIN is on the Bill of Entry. Basic Customs Duty, AIDC, Social Welfare Surcharge and anti-dumping duty are not creditable.

What happens if I do not clear my goods within 30 days?

Under section 48 of the Customs Act, goods not cleared within 30 days of unloading can be sold by the custodian after notice to the importer. Long before that, CFS storage, demurrage and detention charges add up every day, so arrange duty and freight payments before the cargo arrives.

Do I need an IEC to import a small shipment from China?

Yes, commercial imports need an IEC from DGFT, even for a small shipment. Goods for personal use are exempt. Small buyers who prefer not to manage clearance themselves often use a DDP service, where the logistics provider handles clearance and delivery.

Alibaba sourcing India

Alibaba Order-to-Delivery Checklist for Indian Buyers

After shortlisting an Alibaba supplier, turn your enquiry into a documented order and delivery plan. This checklist helps Indian buyers organise the handoffs between seller, inspector, warehouse and freight team. For supplier assessment, start with our Alibaba supplier-checking guide.

Before confirming the order

  • Record the seller’s legal business name and the entity issuing the invoice.
  • Agree model, materials, dimensions, quantities by variant, packaging and any approved sample reference.
  • Confirm production readiness or stock availability and the agreed shipment date.
  • Identify the price currency, delivery basis, payment milestones and excluded charges.

Keep changes in the written order. If a supplier proposes a substitute model or material, obtain and approve its details before allowing production or dispatch.

Check the payment arrangement

If you intend to use Trade Assurance, review the actual order’s eligibility, covered terms and official payment instructions. Alibaba’s Trade Assurance guidance explains the order and payment process. Keep relevant specifications, dates and evidence with the transaction. Protection depends on applicable terms; a badge alone does not guarantee an outcome.

Pause if bank details change unexpectedly. Verify the change independently through an established contact channel. Clarify the role of any buying agent and whether its payment or service arrangement is separate from your Alibaba order.

Before balance payment and dispatch

Agree when inspection happens and what the report covers. Review the findings against the approved specification, then record any rework, replacement or acceptance decision. Visual inspection is separate from required product testing and certification. Resolve import eligibility and documentation before shipment.

Send the freight team a complete cargo record

  • Product descriptions, models, quantities and invoice value.
  • Supplier collection address and contact.
  • Readiness date and collection or domestic-delivery arrangement.
  • Carton count, gross weight and packed carton dimensions.
  • Batteries, liquids, magnets or other special handling features.
  • Final Indian delivery pincode, access restrictions and unloading needs.

For several suppliers, track each order separately and reconcile warehouse receipts before consolidation. Ask IFC for current warehouse instructions and shipping marks before suppliers send the goods.

Compare like-for-like shipping quotations

Ask for inspection, collection, warehouse handling, international freight, insurance arrangements, applicable import charges and final delivery to be identified. Check minimum charges, validity, storage exposure and exclusions. Estimated timing should distinguish supplier preparation, freight, clearance and last-mile delivery.

Read our LCL guide and FCL versus LCL comparison. Use the IFC calculator for an initial estimate, then confirm the actual shipment scope.

At delivery

Reconcile the carton count and condition with the delivery record. Photograph visible discrepancies and retain packaging and shipment documents while raising an issue through the agreed process. Check the relevant notice and claim deadlines; do not assume every issue follows the same refund or insurance procedure.

1688.com India sourcing

1688 Order Checklist for Indian Buyers: Specifications, Samples and Packing

Use this 1688 order checklist to prepare a clear enquiry before buying goods for India. Keep one record for each supplier and product variant so prices, samples and received cartons can be compared against the same requirements. For the full buying process, read IFC’s 1688 buying and shipping guide.

1. Record the exact listing and variant

Save the listing link, seller name, item number, model, colour, size, materials and intended use. Keep dated screenshots of the offer and confirm which variant the quoted price covers. An image match alone does not prove identical materials, construction or performance.

2. Request comparable quotations

  • Quantity per product and variant.
  • Minimum quantity and whether variants can be mixed.
  • Unit price, currency, packaging and customisation charges.
  • Stock availability or estimated production readiness.
  • Domestic delivery destination and transport charges.

Ask the seller to identify differences from your specification. Compare the complete order amount and required services, rather than assuming a low listing price is your final cost.

3. Approve and document the sample

Where practical, obtain a representative sample. Photograph and measure it, record approved materials and finish, and specify acceptable variation. Agree whether sample charges can be credited to a later order. Do not assume sample approval establishes compliance for import or sale in India.

4. Confirm payment and order responsibility

Identify who places the order, the invoicing party, the payment beneficiary and the records you receive. Ask about service fees, exchange-rate basis and payment milestones. Confirm the available payment method for the actual order before relying on a particular account or checkout option.

5. Agree inspection, returns and discrepancy handling

Write down the inspection scope, timing and required report. Confirm the return window, conditions, freight responsibility and how a shortage or defect will be raised. A domestic return arrangement does not automatically cover international freight or guarantee a refund.

6. Collect usable packing details

Request gross weight, carton count, dimensions of each carton size and quantity per carton. Identify batteries, magnets, liquids or special handling features. For several suppliers, use a separate row for each order and reconcile all deliveries against the agreed warehouse receipt records.

7. Confirm the shipment before supplier dispatch

Obtain IFC’s current receiving instructions and shipping mark. Have product eligibility, documentation and the Indian delivery pincode assessed before ordering. The quotation should state inspection, warehouse, freight, clearance-support and final-delivery inclusions and exclusions.

Plan the shipping method using our LCL guide and FCL versus LCL comparison. Use the shipment calculator for an initial estimate that must be confirmed against the actual cargo.

Yiwu market guide for indian importers

Yiwu Market Guide for Indian Importers (2026): Districts, MOQ, Payment and Shipping to India

Yiwu in Zhejiang, China is a major wholesale sourcing destination for Indian importers comparing small commodities and mixed orders. This guide explains how to prepare a market visit, agree supplier terms, collect goods and plan shipping to India with IFC – Imports From China Inc.

Find the right Yiwu market area before you travel

Start with a product shortlist and use the official Chinagoods market directory to identify relevant districts, floors and suppliers. Record each booth number and contact. Confirm the current location, opening schedule and holiday arrangements before booking travel; a general market overview does not guarantee a particular shop will be open.

MOQ: can you buy small quantities?

Minimum quantities depend on the shop, item, variant and customisation. Ask for separate sample, ready-stock and bulk quotations. Confirm whether colours and sizes can be mixed and whether the minimum is per SKU or per order. Purchases from several shops need a collection and consolidation plan.

Prices and payment

  • Ask for the price currency and delivery basis in writing, including whether domestic transport, packing or collection is extra.
  • Confirm the payment method, beneficiary, deposit and balance milestones with each supplier before ordering.
  • Always get a written order slip with item number, price, quantity, carton size and delivery date for every shop.

How to ship Yiwu goods to India

Because a typical Yiwu order involves many suppliers, the usual flow is:

  1. Supplier delivery to a Yiwu warehouse: each shop delivers its cartons to your agent’s warehouse.
  2. Quality check and labelling: goods are counted, inspected and labelled with the required import markings.
  3. Consolidation: all items are loaded together as LCL (shared container) or FCL (full container), or sent by air for urgent cargo.
  4. China export clearance and sea or air freight to an Indian port.
  5. Indian customs clearance and doorstep delivery.

With DDP shipping from China to India, discuss supplier coordination, inspection, consolidation, freight, clearance support and delivery with IFC. The written quotation should state inclusions, exclusions, responsibilities and estimated timing.

Check your landed cost before you buy

A low Yiwu price is only useful if the final cost in India still leaves you a margin. Before placing orders, enter the HSN code, invoice value and carton volume in our free shipment calculator to estimate customs duty, GST and freight.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to travel to Yiwu myself?

No. Many Indian buyers source remotely: an agent visits shops, sends photos, videos and prices, places orders and inspects goods. Visiting in person is still useful for your first large order.

Can I mix many products in one container?

Yes. Mixing items from different Yiwu suppliers in one LCL or FCL shipment is common. Each product still needs a correct HSN code and any product-specific compliance, such as BIS certification for toys or certain electronics.

Do I need an IEC to import from Yiwu?

DGFT generally requires an IEC for imports, subject to specified exemptions. Confirm the importer of record and applicable documentation for your transaction. If you need help planning the arrangement, contact IFC before placing the order.

Import toys from china to india

How to Import Toys from China to India: Compliance Checks and Shipping

Before importing toys from China to India, check product eligibility, the manufacturer’s certification position, labelling, classification and the full delivered cost. A marketplace listing or an ordinary inspection report does not establish that the product meets Indian requirements. IFC – Imports From China Inc can assess your sourcing and shipping enquiry before you commit to an order.

Check the applicable toy requirements before paying

BIS lists toys among products covered by compulsory certification requirements. Its foreign-manufacturer guidance explains that notified products require the Standard Mark under a valid BIS licence. Review the current Toys Quality Control Order, amendments, scope and any applicable exemptions or transition provisions for the actual product and proposed import.

Use the BIS compulsory-certification list and orders and foreign-manufacturer FAQs as starting points. Do not rely on a seller’s statement that an unrelated certificate makes every toy eligible.

What to request from the supplier

  • Manufacturer’s legal name and manufacturing-site address.
  • Exact model, product photographs, intended age group, materials and intended use.
  • Relevant certification or licence details and the product scope claimed by the manufacturer.
  • Packaging, markings, warnings and labelling artwork for review before production.
  • Battery and electrical specifications where applicable, along with packing details.

Have the documents checked against the actual factory and goods. Confirm the applicable standards and marking requirements with a qualified compliance specialist before ordering. A sample purchase is not automatically exempt from product rules.

Agree inspection separately from certification

Approve the product specification and a representative sample where practical. Agree an inspection scope covering quantities, workmanship, packaging and the features you need checked. Discuss safety testing and any specialised assessment separately. A visual inspection cannot substitute for required certification or laboratory testing.

Confirm the HS classification and duty estimate

Provide the product’s function, materials, age group, electrical features and technical details for classification review. Avoid applying one duty percentage to all products marketed as toys. Check the effective tariff and applicable measures using the ICEGATE Trade Guide on Imports, then obtain a shipment-specific estimate. See our import-duty and landed-cost guide.

Plan packing and shipping from China

Ask for carton dimensions, gross weight, carton count and quantity per carton. Large lightweight toys can occupy substantial space, so compare freight using the packed cargo rather than unit weight alone. Identify batteries, liquids, magnets and other special handling features before booking.

Discuss air, LCL or FCL against the actual volume, handling needs and required delivery date. Read our FCL versus LCL comparison. No single mode is cheapest for every order; compare quotations on the same delivery scope.

Prepare a complete order and delivery plan

  1. Review the actual product and current import requirements.
  2. Confirm the manufacturer, documentation, approved specification and order terms.
  3. Agree inspection, testing and how discrepancies will be resolved.
  4. Confirm warehouse receipt instructions and any multi-supplier consolidation.
  5. Review the freight, clearance-support and final-delivery quotation.
  6. Confirm the importer of record and required documents before dispatch.

IFC’s DDP service can be discussed for eligible cargo. Request written inclusions and exclusions; a DDP arrangement does not remove product-compliance requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can a supplier’s certificate cover every toy it sells?

Do not assume so. Check the manufacturer, site, applicable product scope and current validity against the actual goods.

Does inspection make an uncertified product eligible?

No. Inspection, testing and any required certification have different roles. Resolve the applicable requirements before shipment.

Can I consolidate toys from several suppliers?

Discuss consolidation after each product and supplier’s documentation has been reviewed. Keep each line item and manufacturer identifiable in your order and packing records.

Request a toy sourcing and shipping assessment

Send product links, photographs, manufacturer details, certification information, quantity, value, packed dimensions, weight and Indian delivery pincode. WhatsApp IFC: +91 99119 51631 or submit an enquiry. Explore our toys service page and office and delivery city guides.

Import duty from China to India

Import Duty from China to India: How to Prepare a Landed-Cost Estimate

Import duty from China to India depends on the product classification, customs value, origin and applicable notifications. There is no single percentage that reliably prices every shipment. Use this guide to prepare a duty enquiry and a complete landed-cost estimate before paying your supplier.

Start with the actual product

Provide the product description, material, function, technical specification, model, photographs and intended use. A supplier’s suggested HS code is a starting point for review rather than a final Indian classification. Similar-looking products can have different classifications and requirements.

Use official duty tools

The ICEGATE Trade Guide on Imports supports tariff enquiries. ICEGATE also provides a Custom Duty Calculator. Check the relevant tariff item, origin and effective notifications for the proposed import. Save the date and assumptions used in the estimate, and have the classification and applicable measures reviewed before declaration.

What may appear in the duty calculation?

The assessment may include Basic Customs Duty, Social Welfare Surcharge, import IGST and product-specific cesses or trade-remedy duties where applicable. Exemptions and additional measures can change the result. Do not assume a rate quoted for a broad category applies to every product within it.

Check the relevant official notifications rather than relying on an old price list, a marketplace listing or another importer’s past shipment. A duty estimate and a product approval are separate checks: paying duty does not by itself establish that goods may be imported.

A practical quotation checklist

  1. Identify the goods: confirm specifications, quantity, origin and proposed classification.
  2. Document value and terms: provide the supplier invoice, currency, freight and insurance information, and agreed delivery basis.
  3. Review valuation: ask the customs broker to confirm the applicable valuation adjustments and customs exchange rate.
  4. Check duty measures: review the effective tariff, exemptions and any additional product or origin-specific duties.
  5. Check product requirements: identify any required approvals, certification, labelling or import authorisation before shipping.
  6. Record the result: separate estimated customs payments from freight, handling, storage, broker and final-delivery charges.

Duty is only part of the landed cost

Your budget should also account for goods, China domestic transport, inspection, repacking, consolidation, international freight, insurance arrangements, handling and delivery to your Indian address. Ask which charges are included in the quotation and which could arise separately.

For a simple budgeting illustration, goods costing INR 100,000 plus INR 20,000 in agreed logistics charges and INR 30,000 in hypothetical customs payments total INR 150,000 before any other excluded charges. These are invented inputs showing addition only; they are not a duty rate, IFC quotation or customs valuation calculation.

Can import IGST be claimed as input tax credit?

Eligibility depends on the importer, documentation, use of goods and applicable GST conditions. Ask your tax adviser to confirm your position before treating tax as recoverable. Keep cash outlay and any eligible credit separate in your pricing model; do not subtract a potential credit from the money you need to complete an import.

How IFC can help prepare your enquiry

IFC – Imports From China Inc coordinates China sourcing and import enquiries, including inspection, consolidation, air or sea shipping, customs-clearance support and delivery. Share your cargo information for an assessment and a written quotation. Confirm the importer of record, documentation, service responsibilities, inclusions, exclusions and estimated timing.

Use our shipment calculator for an initial estimate and then confirm the result for the actual shipment. Read our LCL guide, FCL versus LCL comparison and DDP service page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use one duty percentage for all Chinese products?

No. Obtain an estimate for the actual classification, value, origin and applicable measures.

Does a DDP quotation mean product checks can be skipped?

No. Confirm the shipment’s eligibility and documentation as well as the quoted delivery and import responsibilities.

What should I send to request a landed-cost estimate?

Send product specifications and links, quantity, invoice value and currency, supplier location, packed weight and dimensions, and the delivery pincode.

WhatsApp IFC: +91 99119 51631 or submit an import enquiry. See our India office and delivery city guides.

China buying agent India

China Buying Agent for India: Costs, Checks and How to Choose

A China buying agent in India helps Indian businesses with supplier searches, samples, purchasing, inspection and shipping from China. The useful questions are which tasks you need help with, how the agent charges and what evidence you receive at each stage. IFC – Imports From China supports China buying, sourcing and import work through its Delhi head office and its own offices in Guangzhou and Yiwu.

Key takeaways

  • Buying agent vs sourcing agent: a sourcing agent finds suppliers; a buying agent also places and follows the order, checks goods and prepares shipping.
  • Fees vary: percentage, fixed project fee or minimum fee – compare the full written scope, not the percentage alone.
  • Verify before paying: legal name, invoicing entity and payment beneficiary must match.
  • Inspection protects you: agree the inspection scope and report before the balance payment.
  • Plan shipping early: packed dimensions and gross weight decide sea vs air and door-to-door cost.

When should you use a China buying agent?

Buying assistance may be useful when you need to compare suppliers, communicate specifications, purchase from several sellers or consolidate goods before shipping. If you already have a supplier, you can request a narrower inspection, consolidation or freight scope. Agree the work before paying a service fee.

Consolidation, freight and customsNoOften, with partnerYes
Door-to-door delivery in IndiaNoWith IFC, yes (DDP)Sometimes

IFC combines all three roles – see China sourcing agent services and door to door shipping from China to India.

What should the buying service include?

  • Supplier shortlist: compare product specifications, minimum order quantities, sample availability, production lead time and written quotations.
  • Sample approval: document dimensions, materials, finish, packaging and acceptable variations before bulk production.
  • Order coordination: record the seller, agreed product, quantities, price, payment milestones and expected readiness date.
  • Inspection: agree who checks the goods, the sample or inspection scope and the report required before dispatch.
  • Shipping preparation: confirm carton counts, packed dimensions, gross weight, warehouse handling and delivery requirements.

How much does a China buying agent cost?

Ask for a written quotation for your order. Agents may charge a percentage, a fixed project fee, a minimum fee or a combination. Compare the total scope rather than a commission percentage alone. This guide does not quote IFC rates; fees depend on the products, supplier count, inspection requirements and work agreed.

Ask whether the commission is calculated on product value or another amount, whether supplier commissions or rebates are received, and which expenses are extra. Samples, testing, inspection visits, local transport, storage, international freight and final delivery may be separate. Duties and taxes should be identified in the quotation where applicable – you can estimate them by HS code in the IFC landed cost calculator.

How to assess a buying agent before a large order

  1. Confirm the legal business name, office contact and invoicing entity. Check that the payment beneficiary matches the agreed transaction, and investigate any unexplained difference.
  2. Ask for a clear service proposal and examples of the reports you will receive.
  3. Discuss experience with your product category and seek references where available – for IFC, read the customer reviews (4.8★ on Google).
  4. Start with samples or a limited assignment before committing to a larger order.
  5. Keep supplier quotations, approved specifications, inspection evidence and payment records together.

Red flags to investigate

Pause when fees change without explanation, a beneficiary changes unexpectedly, product specifications remain vague or someone pressures you to pay before you understand the order. Promises of guaranteed quality or universally unrestricted imports deserve scrutiny. A supplier photograph or chat message alone does not establish product conformity.

Agree responsibilities in writing

Your order and service terms should identify the parties, deliverables, fees, payment milestones, inspection scope, freight scope, insurance arrangement and process for defects or delays. Confirm who acts as importer and who provides the required documentation. Product eligibility and compliance requirements (for example BIS for toys, electronics and footwear) must be assessed before ordering; a buying agent does not remove them.

How IFC works as your China buying agent

  • Own offices in Guangzhou and Yiwu, with English-speaking staff and translators
  • Buying from factories, wholesale markets, Alibaba and 1688
  • Quality inspection and consolidation in IFC’s China warehouse
  • Daily loading of mixed containers and air cargo, customs clearance and DDP delivery across India

Plan consolidation and delivery

For purchases from several factories, align readiness dates and label each supplier’s cartons. Send the packed dimensions and gross weight, rather than product dimensions alone – if you only know the weight, the weight to CBM calculator gives an approximate volume. Read our LCL shipping guide and FCL versus LCL comparison to prepare a freight enquiry. Use the shipment calculator for an initial estimate that must be confirmed against the actual cargo.

LCL shipping from China to India

LCL Shipping from China to India: How It Works and What It Costs (2026)

China to India sea freight LCL (LCL shipping from China to India) lets smaller consignments share a container. IFC – Imports From China, import experts since 2004, consolidates LCL cargo at its own Guangzhou and Yiwu warehouses and loads mixed containers daily, with duty-paid (DDP) delivery to your door in India. Instead of reserving a dedicated container, you book a shared service with charges based on the provider’s volume, weight and minimum-charge rules. Confirm the complete delivered cost and service scope before placing an order.

How less-than-container-load shipping works

  1. Share your supplier details, goods description, quantities, value and packing information.
  2. Confirm product eligibility, the importer arrangement and required documents before dispatch.
  3. Receive the agreed warehouse instructions and shipping mark from IFC.
  4. Goods are received and recorded; arrange inspection or repacking where agreed.
  5. Approved cargo is consolidated for the booked sailing.
  6. At destination, cargo is separated, cleared through the applicable process and released for the agreed delivery.

What affects an LCL quotation?

Provide external packed dimensions, gross weight, carton count, stackability, supplier city and destination pincode. The quote may include supplier collection, warehouse handling, consolidation, international freight, documentation, destination handling, clearance support, storage and domestic transport. Check separately whether duties, taxes, insurance and unloading are included.

Ask for the chargeable basis and minimum charges. Heavy cargo may be billed by weight rather than physical volume. Non-stackable goods, oversized packages and special cargo can require a different arrangement. There is no single per-CBM rate that applies to every product or destination.

Calculate your packed CBM

For dimensions in metres, multiply length x width x height x carton quantity for each packing size, then add the results. For example, ten cartons measuring 0.60 x 0.40 x 0.50 metres total 1.20 CBM. Include pallets, crates and protective packaging in the final measurements. Confirm the warehouse measurement before booking.

Can I combine purchases from different suppliers?

Discuss consolidation before asking suppliers to dispatch. Keep a separate order and packing record for every supplier. Use the shipping mark provided for your shipment and retain delivery receipts. Goods that arrive late can affect the planned dispatch. Identify batteries, liquids, magnets and other handling needs so the team can assess whether items can travel together.

How long does LCL shipping take?

Request an estimate covering supplier readiness, collection, receiving, inspection, consolidation, departure, ocean transit, destination release and final delivery. A vessel transit estimate is not a complete door-to-door promise. Schedules, documentation queries, inspections and destination access can change timing. Ask what updates you will receive and what happens if a supplier misses the agreed cutoff.

LCL or a dedicated FCL container?

LCL can be practical for smaller shipments. A dedicated container may be worth comparing as volume increases or when handling requirements favour it. The crossover depends on current quotations and the cargo, rather than a universal CBM rule. Read our FCL vs LCL comparison for a clearly labelled illustrative calculation.

Packing, inspection and delivery

Agree carton strength, moisture protection, fragile-item protection and labelling before collection. Clarify the scope of any inspection: a carton count or external-condition check is different from product testing. Check insurance terms and the procedure for reporting shortages or damage. For delivery, provide unloading arrangements, floor access and any appointment requirements.

Request an IFC LCL quotation

IFC – Imports From China Inc coordinates sourcing, inspection, consolidation and suitable shipping options for Indian buyers. Share the product, supplier city, quantity, invoice value, gross weight, carton dimensions and delivery pincode on WhatsApp +91 99119 51631 or submit an enquiry. Try the shipment calculator for an initial estimate and confirm it against a written quote. Explore DDP shipping and our India delivery-city guides.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay only for physical space?

Not necessarily. Ask about weight/volume rules, minimums, fixed fees and special handling.

Can I ship a small order?

Send the packing details for assessment. Compare LCL with suitable air options using the complete quote.

Will all suppliers use the same warehouse address?

Follow the current receiving instructions issued for your specific cargo and mode. Do not reuse an old address or shipping mark without confirmation.

Reviewed 18 October 2026. General reference: Maersk’s LCL explanation. Actual terms and eligibility depend on the booked service.

FCL vs LCL shipping from China to India

FCL vs LCL Shipping from China to India: Which Is Cheaper? (2026 Guide)

FCL vs LCL shipping from China to India: FCL reserves a container for your shipment, while LCL shares container space with other consignments. The better choice depends on total charges, packed volume, gross weight, cargo handling and your delivery deadline. There is no universal CBM threshold that makes one option cheaper on every shipment.

What is FCL shipping?

FCL means Full Container Load. You book a container for your cargo; it does not have to be filled to its maximum capacity. It can suit larger orders, project shipments or goods for which dedicated container space is useful. Equipment suitability, payload, access and packing must be checked before booking. Customs examinations and other handling can still occur.

What is LCL shipping?

LCL means Less than Container Load. Your goods share a container with other shipments. Cargo is received for consolidation at origin and separated at destination. This can suit smaller orders where a dedicated container would leave substantial unused space. Ask how volume, weight, minimum charges and handling are billed.

FCL and LCL compared

Factor FCL LCL
Container space Reserved for your shipment Shared with other consignments
Cost comparison Container rate plus agreed local charges Chargeable volume/weight, minimums and agreed local charges
Handling Dedicated container; inspections can still occur Consolidation and deconsolidation stages
Timing Depends on cargo readiness, route and booked service Also depends on consolidation and release schedules

Ask both providers to quote the same collection point, destination, packing list and service scope. Compare supplier collection, origin handling, international freight, documentation, destination handling, clearance support, storage allowances and domestic delivery. Confirm which duties, taxes, insurance and unloading charges are included or excluded. A low ocean-freight figure alone does not establish the lowest delivered cost.

An illustrative break-even calculation

Suppose a hypothetical LCL quote is INR 5,500 per CBM plus INR 12,000 fixed charges, and a comparable FCL quote totals INR 95,000 for the same scope. At 8 CBM, the LCL example totals INR 56,000; at 14 CBM, INR 89,000; at 18 CBM, INR 111,000. The arithmetic break-even is (95,000 – 12,000) / 5,500, or about 15.1 CBM.

These are illustrative numbers, not IFC rates or a market benchmark. The model excludes any costs not specified in those hypothetical quotes. Actual pricing can be non-linear and can include weight-based charges or minimums. Use current written quotations and item-specific tax treatment.

How to prepare your packing details

For dimensions in metres, CBM equals length x width x height x carton quantity. Add the result for each carton size. Provide external packed measurements, gross weight, stackability and any handling restrictions. Identify batteries, liquids, magnets and other special cargo. Pallets, crates and protective packing can change the final volume.

Which option suits furniture and mixed orders?

For furniture sourcing, consider packaging, loading arrangements and delivery access alongside freight. For a smaller mixed order from multiple suppliers, discuss consolidation and ask whether the items can travel together. Fragility does not create an automatic FCL rule: suitable packing, insurance terms, handling requirements and the actual service all matter.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What is the total cost for the same door-to-door scope?
  • What collection, departure, arrival and release estimates are included?
  • What free storage is allowed and what happens if documents are delayed?
  • Are insurance, duties, taxes, unloading and final delivery included?
  • Who provides shipment updates and handles a shortage or damage report?

Frequently asked questions

Must an FCL container be completely full?

No. FCL describes the booking arrangement. Whether it is economical depends on the complete quote and shipment requirements.

Is LCL always slower?

No fixed difference applies to every route. Ask for estimates including consolidation, vessel schedules, clearance and final delivery.

Can the calculator replace a written quotation?

No. Confirm the estimate against actual packing, product eligibility, destination and agreed service scope before ordering.
